Act I Scene I
The three women are sitting around a table playing cards. There are three quarters in the middle of the table and each woman has a few quarters beside her. After several moves, MAXINE picks up a card and lays her hand down.
MAXINE: Gin!
EDYTHE: Shit!
AUDREY: Edythe!
EDYTHE: What?!
AUDREY: Language!
EDYTHE: Don’t ‘language’ me, Audrey. I’ll say whatever I damn well want.
AUDREY: But the staff here –
EDYTHE: – the staff here can kiss my ass. I have no intention of doing anything to please the guards in this prison.
AUDREY: It’s not a prison.
EDYTHE: Says you.
AUDREY: Prisons have bars.
EDYTHE: And all we have is a beer fridge.
MAXINE pulls the quarters from the middle of the table to herself.
MAXINE: Okay, so that’s three straight wins for me.
EDYTHE: Thank you, Maxine. We might be old, but we can still count to three. You got a horseshoe up your butt?
MAXINE: What do you mean? It’s pure skill.
EDYTHE: Oh sure, randomly drawing the only card in the deck that could help you is pure skill. I hate cards.
MAXINE: Want to play again?
EDYTHE: Damned right I do! I need to earn the pot back.
AUDREY: It’s only a quarter a game.
EDYTHE: And at this rate, I’ll be broke by the end of the week. (To MAXINE) Stop gloating and start dealing.
MAXINE: Ante up, ladies. I appreciate your contributions to my retirement fund.
EDYTHE: God you’re annoying.
