Comedy: Common Ground is a heartfelt comedy about unexpected friendship and fresh starts. When Pam’s husband leaves her for another woman, she’s blindsided, devastated, and forced to pick up the pieces of her life. Enter Jake, the equally bewildered husband of the other woman, who shows up on Pam’s doorstep looking for answers and a bit of consolation.
Full of wit, warmth, and humour, Common Ground explores the absurdity of relationships and the resilience needed to start over. With quick banter, quirky revelations, and a dash of romantic possibility, Pam and Jake discover that sometimes, the best way forward is simply to find common ground.
Cast: 1M/2F
First production: Orillia Opera House
Playwright’s Notes: Common Ground is the first play I’ve written that is set in a specific location: Florenceville, New Brunswick, which is on the upper reaches of the beautiful St. John River. It’s farming country, something that is important to the story. It starts at the end, in that our first look at the characters is when things are in crisis mode for Pam. Her marriage appears to have ended. Her question is, “What do I do now?” It’s the answer to that question that becomes the focus of the rest of the play. Despite the serious theme, Common Ground is full of heart with lots of funny moments. It was a joy to write and a lot of fun to produce.
